To give your loved one’s apartment a more personal touch, and offer the feeling of being "at home," some spring decorating could be in order.

Here are some spring home decorating ideas to share with your loved ones – whether they reside in a retirement community or a house of their own.

Groupings

The following are some decorating ideas that involve groupings:

• The 4-foot rule – From the top of a lamp sitting on an end table, to the floor, keep the maximum height at 4 feet or less for increased stability.
• Three levels, three items – To create an order of visual importance, at varying heights, group 3 items (Example: three different sized vases – with or without spring flowers – or two vases and a spring scented candle)
• The one, three, five, seven rule – To create visual interest, in odd numbers, display your favorite spring-themed items.

Hanging Items

Here are some suggestions for hanging items around the apartment:

• 3 to 5 inches rule – Choose some spring-themed artwork or photos and, in groups, hang them around the apartment. They should not be any more than 10 inches apart from each other, but no less than three to five inches.
• 40 inch/eye level mirror – Find a framed mirror and, with the bottom of the frame approximately 40 inches from the ground, hang it (so that, as needed, you can see your reflection). Around its border, consider draping some artificial spring flowers.
• The 59-inch rule – For ideal viewing of spring-themed artwork, when you hang it on your wall, make sure that the center of the picture is approximately 59 inches from the floor.

Spring Themes

There are several items you can add to your loved one’s apartment that won't even take up floor space if that's a concern. Try to encourage a spring theme as much as possible – at least for now:

• Wall decals
• A bulletin board for collecting interesting tidbits, photos, cards, etc.
• Flower arrangement or centerpiece
• Wall shelf for decorative, season-themed, or holiday-themed items
• Runners and/or tablecloths
• Throw pillows
• A new bedding set
• Favorite framed photos or artwork (some hanging suggestions were mentioned above)

Getting Clearance

Be sure, before making any major changes to your loved one’s apartment or embarking on any major decorating projects, to clear it with the retirement community administration. Sometimes, but not always, certain things are not allowed. You may want to discuss not only what is permitted but what they feel is practical. Picture hanging hardware is one area, for example, that should be discussed with the administration. Painting walls and the colors you use could be another source of concern.
